The Best Fresh Fish Tavernas in Santorini for Families

The fishing harbour at Vlychada supplies several of Santorini’s best tavernas with whatever came in on the boats that morning, and for families that matters more than a caldera view. Santorini’s dining scene ranges from Michelin-calibre tasting menus to beachfront grills, but the places that work best with children are the ones where the fish arrives whole and the service doesn’t rush you.

Isabella’s Take
Which Santorini fish tavernas actually work for a family dinner?

The fishing harbour tavernas at Vlychada and Ammoudi Bay serve the freshest fish, but only Vlychada stays relaxed enough for young children. Inland options like Metaxi Mas offer better value and a louder, more forgiving atmosphere. Reserve ahead for any sunset-adjacent table.

Fishing Harbours · South & North Coast
Tavernas That Start With the Catch

To Psaraki sits above Vlychada Marina on the south coast, a handful of tables tucked among the traditional cave houses carved into the pumice cliffs. The menu follows whatever the local boats landed that morning — sea bream, red mullet, prawns, grilled cuttlefish. You will need a car or scooter to reach Vlychada, and the road is narrow in places, but the setting stays calm even in August.

When Julien and I took Sofia to To Psaraki, she spent most of the meal watching the fishing boats unload while we ate sea bream that had been swimming hours earlier. The staff brought her a plate of grilled bread and olive oil before we even ordered.

Ammoudi Bay is the opposite experience — a tiny horseshoe harbour at the bottom of the steep staircase below Oia, with half a dozen tavernas sharing the waterfront. The fish here is grilled whole and served simply, and the setting at golden hour is hard to argue with. It is touristy, it is not cheap, and the walk back up those stairs with a tired child is a genuine consideration. Multiple small tavernas line the harbour, all serving similar catches.

Practical tip

At Ammoudi Bay, aim for an early dinner around 18:30. The crowd thins out before the sunset rush, and you will have an easier time securing a table with space for a pram or a high chair.

Inland & Beachfront · Exo Gonia to Perivolos
Where Fish Meets Family Atmosphere

Metaxi Mas in Exo Gonia looks nothing special from the outside — a tidy village house at the end of a quiet road — but inside it is always full, always loud, and the food is exactly what you want after a day of touring. The menu reads like the greatest hits of Greek taverna cooking: grilled octopus, lamb chops, spanakopita, grilled halloumi, and a mountainous horiatiki salad. Portions are large, the house wine is decent, and the bill comes as a pleasant surprise. The catch: everyone knows about it now. It fills up on most nights even in shoulder season. Book ahead.

Budget-conscious diners
Worth knowing

Kamari, the beach resort on the east coast, has a long strip of relaxed tavernas where you can eat a full meal for 20 to 30 euros per person without skimping. The atmosphere is casual, the tables are spaced widely enough for children, and several places serve grilled fish alongside pasta and souvlaki for picky eaters.

Jojo Beach Bar on the black sands of Perivolos offers a different rhythm entirely — beachfront tables, an in-bar swimming pool, comfortable sunbeds, and a menu of fresh seafood and Mediterranean dishes. It works best for a long lunch while the kids play in the sand. Forty One, also on Perivolos, is a premium beach club with high-end Mediterranean-Greek food and sushi; the setting is elegant but the service pace suits adults more than toddlers.

The table above covers the main options, but it misses one constraint: none of these tavernas take online reservations through a central system. You call or email directly. For Metaxi Mas and the Ammoudi Bay spots, that means phoning a day or two ahead in high season.

Santorini Specialities · What to Order
The Dishes That Make the Meal

The island’s volcanic soil produces ingredients you will not find elsewhere in Greece, and the best tavernas let them speak for themselves. Fava is a smooth split-pea puree made from Santorini’s own yellow fava beans — earthy, slightly sweet, served warm with capers and olive oil. Tomatokeftedes are fried tomato fritters made from the island’s tiny, intensely flavoured cherry tomatoes. White aubergine is a pale, almost white variety that is sweeter and less bitter than regular aubergine. Order all three as starters before the fish arrives.

If the meal sparks an interest in the local ingredients, there are cooking classes on the island that teach you to make fava, tomatokeftedes, and other Santorini staples from scratch. For families who want to pair a harbour dinner with a boat excursion, sunset cruises approach the caldera from the water and offer a different perspective on the same coastline. And if you are based in one village and want to explore the inland tavernas, half-day tours cover Exo Gonia, Pyrgos, and Megalochori in a single afternoon.

Assyrtiko wine deserves its own mention. The island’s flagship grape variety grows in basket-trained vines that spiral low to the ground to survive the Meltemi wind. The wine is crisp, high-acid, and mineral — a natural partner for grilled fish and mezze. It is also significantly cheaper on the island than anywhere else.

Watch out for

The Ammoudi Bay staircases are roughly 300 steps from Oia’s main street. Carrying a sleeping child back up after dinner is not something you want to discover the hard way. Take a taxi down and arrange a pickup, or skip it with very young children.

Reservations and Timing

Book sunset tables early. Any restaurant with a direct caldera view in Oia or Imerovigli will fill their best tables four to eight weeks in advance in July and August. For the inland tavernas, a phone call the day before usually suffices. Local tavernas often do not fill up until 21:00, so an early dinner at 18:30 or 19:00 means a quieter room and more attention from the staff.

Go inland for value. The best value-for-money meals on the island are in Exo Gonia, Pyrgos, and Megalochori. Rent a car or scooter and explore — the inland villages hold family-run tavernas that most tourists never find.

Which Santorini fish tavernas are best for children?

To Psaraki in Vlychada and the Kamari strip are the most relaxed options. Both have space between tables, staff accustomed to children, and menus that include plain grilled fish and pasta.

The downside: neither has a caldera view. If you want the view plus a child-friendly atmosphere, aim for an early dinner at Ammoudi Bay before the sunset crowd arrives.

Do I need to book ahead for fish tavernas in Santorini?

Yes, especially for Metaxi Mas and any Ammoudi Bay table with a waterfront position. A phone call the day before works for most inland spots.

For August, call four to five days ahead. Walk-ins are possible at Kamari and Perivolos beachfront spots.

Are the fish tavernas in Ammoudi Bay worth the walk down?

The fish is fresh and the setting is unique, but the experience is touristy and the prices reflect the location. A meal for two with wine runs roughly 80 to 100 euros.

The real downside is the climb back up. If you have a child under four or anyone with mobility concerns, choose Vlychada instead.

What should I order at a Santorini fish taverna?

Start with fava and tomatokeftedes, then order the catch of the day grilled whole with olive oil and lemon. Ask what came in that morning — the taverna owner will usually show you the fish on ice.

Avoid the frozen imported fish that some beachfront spots serve. If the menu lists “sea bass” at a low price in August, it did not come from Santorini waters.

Is there a dress code at Santorini fish tavernas?

No. Beachwear is fine at Perivolos and Kamari. Inland tavernas like Metaxi Mas expect covered shoulders and closed shoes for adults, but children in sandals and shorts are never an issue.

The exception is the fine-dining end of Oia and Imerovigli, where some restaurants request long trousers for men. Stick to the harbour tavernas and you will not need to think about it.

The fishing harbours that supply Santorini’s best tavernas have not changed their routine in decades — the boats go out before dawn, return by midday, and the catch lands on tables within hours. That rhythm is what makes a meal at To Psaraki or Ammoudi Bay different from a meal anywhere else, and it is the same rhythm that kept Sofia entertained long enough for us to finish our wine.
